5th Grade Class Visits Hearthstone

5th Grade Class Visits Hearthstone – Carrie Cybulski, 5th-B Teacher

Our class had a wonderful visit to Hearthstone this last week. We had the privilege of presenting a short play about the Pilgrims’ voyage to the New World and their friendship with the Native Americans upon landing in Plymouth Harbor. I explained some of the interesting things we learned through our play. For example, women didn’t have legal rights back then, which is why none of the women’s names appear on the Mayflower Compact. We also learned that several of the food items we eat at Thanksgiving were not part of the first Thanksgiving meal. It made us all very thankful for pumpkin pie. Students also presented a scripture that our class had memorized from Luke 1, titled “The Benedictus.” This scripture is a song of praise and thanksgiving to the Lord. It was the perfect coupling to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.

To end our time with the Hearthstone residents, each student introduced himself and identified his favorite Thanksgiving food. Mashed potatoes and pecan pie seemed to be the favorites! Once finished, our class had the opportunity to greet the residents in the room. Person after person thanked me for bringing the class to visit. They told me how much joy it brought them to see the students’ smiling faces and hear what they were learning. I was personally blessed by how comfortable the students were as they talked with each resident. Our frequent visits to Hearthstone have not only blessed the residents there, but have also had a remarkable effect on our students. Students have already begun asking when our next visit to Hearthstone will be. What a blessing!
