2018 Varsity Track and Field Season

2018 Varsity Track and Field Season

The completion of the 2018 Varsity track and field season came to a close at Hayward Field in Eugene on May 18. Led by senior captains Sydney R. and Gresham B., the team capped off another successful season filled with great performances and many records set.

The 10 returning track members were joined by 10 first year varsity runners. The team quickly came together and worked hard to increase their endurance and harden their will to compete and win. Over three months the team worked out several evenings each week in the rain, cold, wind, and the glorious sunshine that every Oregonian craves in April and May.

During eight track meets, the team members individually set many personal, team, and state records. The team successfully added men’s and women’s field events where Anne B., Katherine D., and Caden S. competed in throw events, while Lauren R., Luke W., and Luke T. competed in long jump.

Freshman phenoms, Lydia E. and Seth B., joined a veteran group of seasoned runners and left a strong impression on the competition that they will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

With the addition of some first time senior runners and some retiring superstars, the distance team continued to set personal marks each and every meet. “Every distance runner showed marked improvement each and every time they stepped out on the track for a race,” said Coach Tsuei. “The kids pushed themselves beyond their comfort and ran with joy and abandon to the glory of God,” he added.

The sprinters, who kept their distances between 100 and 400 meters, showed greatness once again. Led by two-time State Champion Sydney R., the women’s sprints showed off great form with top 8 finishes week in and week out by Sydney and Emma M. The men’s team hosted a couple of State worthy hurdlers in Josh W. and Gresham B. while speedsters Christian T. and Matt R. took their turn blazing down the track in the 100 and 200.

All in all, the team set 52 personal records, 15 school records, and 1 state meet record. The men and women both finished in the top 5 out of 23 schools at the districts with 18 top eight finishes, 10 top three finishes, and 3 district championships. The Archers qualified in nine events at the State Track and Field Championships with all runners competing earning a top eight medal. Coach Storm said, “It was great to see success by such a great group of runners. They represented their school with pride and were such an inspiration to all who watched them run. I am especially blessed to be associated with such wonderful kids. Go Archers!”
