The Tech-Wise Family by Andy Crouch

Chapter 2 – Travis Koch, Dean of Academics

If you stand in the center of your living room and look around, what do you see? Couch, coffee table, bookshelf, television, fireplace. Maybe a lamp, some pictures on the wall. Perhaps you can see into the kitchen or dining room from there. Your living room is probably located in the center of your house, but what would you say is at the center of your home?

In Chapter 2 of The Tech-Wise Family, Andy Crouch gives us a simple test to help us identify the center of our home: “find the place that is its emotional center–the place where your family spends the most time and the most energy–and take an inventory of what you see there.” Are the things at the center of your home the kinds of things that reward creativity, skill, and active engagement? Are they things that reinforce relationships? Or are they things that simply make life more convenient without demanding much of us? Are we willing to create spaces and spend our time in places where “easy everywhere” is harder to find?

Remember, your life is made up of a thousand little moments. In the end, you are what you spend your time doing.
