Establishing a Permanent PreK-12 Campus Is Vital to Our Mission
The mission of St. Stephen’s Academy is priceless. St. Stephen’s Academy is the only PreK-12 school offering a classical and Christian education in the Hillsboro/Beaverton/Tigard region of the Portland metro area. This education develops Christian character and equips our students with tools of learning that will last a lifetime. These students will impact their culture not only immediately but also eternally through their witness for Christ. SSA has been blessed with success, but without a more adequate campus we cannot progress further. Such a campus will allow us to more fully realize our goal of being a leading K-12 classical Christian school on the West Coast. A school that will be at the forefront of enabling our children to clearly and graciously engage contemporary culture with a biblical worldview. A school that will be able to offer a full range of excellent academic, artistic, and athletic faith- based programs. In addition, our commitment to the ideals of Truth, Goodness, and Beauty needs to be visibly communicated in the appearance of our school. We are very grateful for our current facility, and thankful to all who have done so much to build it, but it was always a step on a longer road, and it is time to purchase our own property and begin implementing a master building plan that will fill up this property with facilities that will serve the expansion of God’s kingdom.
This new campus will allow for properly sized spacious classrooms that will enhance our student’s learning environment and give our teachers more opportunities to use a variety of teaching methods to best meet each student’s needs. The increased number of classrooms will allow us to continue accommodating the increasing number of families that share our vision and want to be a part of our school. We will also be able to bring all students, PreK-12, back under one roof where older students can interact with and model Christ-like behavior for the younger students through precious cross-grade interactions. Having dedicated classroom space for science labs, visual arts, and choirs will help us to increase the quality of our science and fine arts programs. Additional space for teachers and administrators will improve the operational and organizational aspects of our school. And finally, ample green space acreage will move our students off of the parking lot and into God’s creation for their physical education and extracurricular athletic programs.
Paying for the campus with funds raised through a capital campaign and a reasonable amount of debt will help to keep tuition at reasonable levels and ensure that tuition dollars go where they are most needed: to fair compensation for our teachers and continued improvement in our core curriculum.
The building campaign is a two-phase approach that involves the following.
Purchase facility and site + Fit out Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall
The property we currently have a purchase agreement on is located at Walker Rd. and NW Von Neumann Dr. in Hillsboro and is composed of ~5.6 acres of land. This is part of the former Oregon Graduate Institute site. It has almost 78,000 SF of educational facilities with room to fit out a church sanctuary and fellowship hall which will be able to be used by the school for assembly/performance and cafeteria space. This property has ~40 classrooms along with ample office, board, and commons space. The former use of this facility was as a graduate level research laboratory space and so we will be equipped with world class laboratories for our science program to flourish in.
Build Playgrounds/Sports Field/Landscaping
We are committed to having safe and enjoyable outdoor playgrounds on both grass and hardscape to allow out students to get the exercise they need while building friendships that will last. We are also committed to having space for our athletic teams to practice. While we do not have space for a full track and field we will use the space we have to effectively support this part of our school.
Build Full Sized Gymnasium and Atrium
A 90’x110’ gymnasium will be constructed to support our athletic programs as well as our need for multipurpose space. This gymnasium will support two practice basketball courts or one regulation sized basketball court or multiple volleyball courts. The gym would be sited to the north-east of the current building. This gym will also be connected to an atrium similar to the one on the south side of the building and which will allow for a grand entrance and meeting place from the north parking lot.
Are you able to help is reach our goal of $2,000,000 by the end of June and $3,000,000 by winter of 2017? We have already raised over $600,000 toward the goal. With your help and the help of the St. STephen’s Academy community, friends and family we believe this goal is achievable and we trust in God to provide for our needs in this area.
