5th Grade Preview Day

5th Grade Preview Day

Our South Campus welcomed the 5th grade students to Preview Day on Tuesday to give them just a glimpse into life as a middle school student next fall. Excitement was high as they started their day off with fun activities in the gym with Mr. Koch, Mr. Sharer, and the senior class. After expending some of that boundless energy, students were surprised to learn that they had their own locker for the day, and excitedly worked to get that combination just right in order to get theirs open.

After successfully opening their lockers, they headed to their first Upper School Bible class to discuss Jonah with Mr. Feil, and to literature class with Mr. Boden where they were placed in a serious dilemma, deciding who makes it onto the lifeboat and who stays behind. After deciding matters of life and death, our amazing 5th grade students had a fun Latin lesson with Mr. Smith and worked on trying to solve logic puzzles with Mrs. Boden. Phew! Just the morning schedule was enough to wear them out!

We finally gave them a break for lunch, where they got to spend time with some of the high school house members, who thoughtfully brought them special treats to enjoy, and then sent them out to run off that sugar in the gym playing 9-square or out in the field to play soccer and enjoy the sunshine.

After a fun lunch, the 5th grade students had the opportunity to meet one of the 6th grade teachers and spend time in what may be their classroom next fall! The final part of the day consisted of Mr. Gilmore’s amazing science class where he walked on eggs (raw) without cracking the shells and challenged the student teams to see how many textbooks they could stack on top of their 3 eggs. The winning team made it all the way to 27 textbooks without breaking their eggs!

Finally, the day wrapped up with a parent/student meeting with Mr. Koch and Mr. Breckenridge to talk about the fun events of Preview Day and to give both students and parents the opportunity to ask questions about middle school life at SSA. We loved having the 5th grade students at South Campus and can’t wait until they are with there in the fall!
